Some 30 years after Dr. David M. Eddy and JAMA published a series of articles introducing methods and guidelines for the practice of "evidence-based medicine," judges, lawyers and other stakeholders are slowly bringing the concepts of evidence-based decision making to the world of criminal justice.

In both law and medicine, however, researchers face discouraging challenges and substantial time lags in bringing established scientific results to those who must make real life decisions for real people in real cases. For example, it is well-recognized that it takes an average of 17 years for proven, evidence-based medical research to reach clinical practitioners.

To counter this gap, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funds programs like the University of Wisconsin Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (UW ICTR), intentionally creating infrastructure "that transforms research into a continuum from investigation through discovery and to translation into real-life community practice, thereby linking even the most basic research to practical improvements in human health." See https://ictr.wisc.edu.

Other similar entities exist and should certainly be supported. Still, for matters as crucial and as costly as justice and public safety, these efforts seem too few and far between.
